Book Club – THE DIE

If you’d like to discuss The Die with your book club, here is a series of questions to guide your discussion.

Would you like me to join your book club via Zoom? Please reach out using my contact form. Thanks!

  1. Which character in The Die do you identify most closely with? What about them—and about yourself—leads you to feel this way?
  2. Imagine and discuss what your life might be like under an authoritarian regime. How would it be different than your life now?
  3. What are your thoughts about the current state of democracy where you live? In the world? What do you see as your role in preserving democracy?
  4. If you are familiar with The Mahabharata, what parallels do you see between its story and characters and the story and characters in The Die? What differences do you see? What subtle references and symbols did you notice?
  5. Why do you think Jedd insisted on playing the dice game? If he were your best friend (or, depending on age, your child), what would you say to him? Imagine that discussion.
  6. As June points out, many people see politics as inherently dirty. Do you agree? Why or why not?
  7. How do you determine the right (or dharmic) course of action in any given situation?
  8. How can you both be an activist and follow a spiritual path, without compromising your values or feeling overwhelmed?
  9. Are you going through life more like a steering wheel or more like a self-driving vehicle?
  10. What piece of wisdom expressed by one of the characters has stuck with you? How might you apply it in your life?
  11. If you were to, as Darah mentions, think more in terms of “us and ours” instead of “me and mine,” what would you act differently in the world? What would you do?
  12. At the end of the book, it is unclear whether the friends will go public with what they know. Do you think they should? Why or why not?
