  1. With which character in The Lie do you identify most closely, and why?
  2. If you ever found yourself in Jedd’s position, held captive by terrorists, how would you handle it? If it were a loved one being held, what would you do?
  3. Each character has a different emotional response to Jedd disappearing. What would you say to each?
  4. Recall a time you realized someone was or had been lying to you. How did you react emotionally? How did your body feel? How did you respond to them?
  5. What’s the worst lie someone ever told you? What made it especially bad?
  6. How do you respond when you encounter a lie or false information online? Do you always address it? If not, what is your reasoning?
  7. Recall a lie you’ve told. Why did you tell it? How did you feel about it then? And now?
  8. What does the character of Naomi represent to you? Do you know any Naomis?
  9. June says, “Without truth, there can be no democracy.” How do you understand that? Do you agree or disagree? Why?
  10. The kid talks about becoming a truth teller. What would that look like for you?
  11. Each chapter begins with a quotation from the Bhagavad Gītā. Did any especially resonate with you? If so, how?
  12. As social-impact fiction, The Lie is intended to convey a message. How would you articulate the message you received?
